Magarey Medal – Tom Lewis

Tom Lewis Claims Magarey Medal Glory

A dominant mid-season burst has propelled Sturt star Tom Lewis to SANFL’s highest individual honour, the 2025 Magarey Medal.

The 25-year-old midfielder stormed into contention with five consecutive best-on-ground performances, finishing with a commanding 33 votes to become the 16th Double Blue to win the award.

After sitting equal-third at Round 9, Lewis surged into the lead by Round 15 and never looked back, showcasing the consistency and toughness that has made him a fan favourite at Thomas Farms Oval.

Across the season, Lewis polled votes in 13 of his 18 matches, collecting eight first preferences and averaging 25.8 disposals, 7.4 clearances and 8.4 tackles per game. His ability to dominate at the stoppages and drive Sturt forward was a hallmark of the Double Blues’ record-breaking year.

His Magarey Medal caps off a remarkable campaign in which he was also named vice-captain of The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year, won the R.O. Shearman Medal as voted by the coaches, The Advertiser Player of the Year Award, and the SANFL Now Player of the Year Award.

Originally from the Meningie Football Club (now Coorong Cats), Lewis has overcome major setbacks in his career, including a knee reconstruction in 2019 and a life-threatening ruptured spleen in 2022. Overlooked in the 2018 AFL Draft, he has since established himself as one of the competition’s elite midfielders.

This season, Lewis also thrived in an acting captaincy role, leading the Double Blues through extended absences of skipper James Battersby and fellow vice-captain Will Snelling.

Tom Lewis’ Magarey Medal triumph is not just individual recognition — it is a proud moment for the Sturt Football Club, adding another chapter to the rich history of the Double Blues.
