Round 1 – Women’s Coach Report

Round 1 – South Adelaide vs Sturt
February 15, 2019 7:00pm

Final score: South Adelaide 6.10 (46) Sturt 2.2 (14)

Great showing by our girls on Friday at Flinders Uni Stadium but unfortunately we left with a loss, going down by 32 points.

We had seven debutants, three of which coming up from our Under 17 talent pathway program. Our girls started the game well by scoring the first goal, kicked by co-captain Caitlyn Swanson. This was cancelled out by South who replied with a goal shortly after. Our lead was restored through Lauren Lovell who ran into an open goal and kicked our second for the match.

The second quarter was tough for both teams with South Adelaide continuously entering their forward 50 and being repealed by our defenders, lead by Alex Ballard and Casey Fraser. Our playing group were able to keep South Adelaide goal-less and going into half time equal with last year’s premiers. Unfortunately Casey Fraser injured her hand and was sent to hospital for scans.

We started the second half strong with our mid-field working well between the arcs. Izzy Kuiper and Georgia Bevan being our biggest ball winners. Halfway through the 3rd quarter Paxton Davis-Mattner was collected as she was rebounding defensive 50 and injured. Unfortunately Paxton could no longer take part in the match. From then on, the girls had a tough task to stay in the game and unfortunately we were unable to stay with South in the last quarter, with the Panthers kicking 4 unanswered goals to run away with the match.

We take on North Adelaide at Coopers Stadium this Friday night. Look forward to seeing you all there.
