We came up against North Adelaide at City Mazda Stadium on Friday night and although we had a loss last week to South Adelaide, the playing group were confident that we could come away with a win. Key focus for the week leading into the game was our ability to control the play and to do so for 4 quarters.
Two changes were made to the side from Round 2, with Chloe Isaacson missing with an ankle injury and Nicole Baker unavailable due to bruising to the knee. This saw Ellen Maple and Alex Ballard debut for the club.
Family and friends saw Sturt continuing to improve from our previous matches but unfortunately, we were unable to get our first win for the season. We started well and in the first half our midfield were able to get first possession through Jess Foley who ended the game with 22 hit outs. Our ball movement between the 50’s was good but our inability to find a target in the forward 50 and unable to hit the scoreboard let the group down. Going into the halftime break we were only 11 points down and still in the game.
The third quarter was a tight affair with both teams playing good football and scoring 2 goals each. Our goals came from set shots from Lauren Taylor and Maya Rigter. Again, our drive and defence were good with Rachel Dunstan and Shae Gundlach leading the charge. Caitlyn Swanson continued to work well with Jess Foley getting us first use of the ball from hit outs.
With the game in the balance and Sturt still being 2 goals down, the group were asked to take the game on and try to win at all cost. This saw us make errors and North kick 3 unanswered goals to win the game. Although it was another loss, 2 new players made their debut for the Club and the group as a collective have shown improvement across the board.
Our next game is 8:30pm this Friday 23 February against Glenelg at Coopers Stadium – see you all there.
