Ben Hansen Retires

The Club wishes to advise that Premiership Player Ben Hansen has effective immediately retired from football due to an ongoing back injury.

Ben was emotional when advising the playing group at the last training session and wishes to thank the Club, members and supporters (including the Chambo Choir) for their amazing support over his Sturt journey.

Ben’s achievements include: 2016 League Premiership Player, 2016 Goal of the Year, 2015 Rick Davies Medal, 2015 & 2014 Senior State Team, 2011 Len Fitzgerald Best First Year Player Award, 2008 Under 17’s Premiership

Coach Nathan Grima was keen to get Ben into the team because at his best he is one of the most damaging small forwards in the competition. What has impressed me is his resilience to continue to push his mind and body to the limits to get back to playing League football. This is after the disappointment of missing the 2017 Premiership due to a serious back injury that has been an ongoing issue for almost two years and has ultimately forced his early retirement.

One of the key messages the group can take from ‘Shred’ ís to take nothing for granted and work as hard as you can.

In the short time that I have known Shred I have found him easy to connect with. I have loved his passion for the contest and the club. He has a good football brain with an advanced understanding of the game. Most of all I admire his genuine care for his teammates.

He is disappointed he could not reach 100 games but retires knowing he has exhausted all options to get his body right.

He should be extremely proud of all he has achieved in football.

We will miss you Shredda.
