The 2018 West End State Squad has been trimmed to 29 players ahead of the clash with the WAFL at Adelaide Oval this Saturday.
As many as seven Double Blues’ premiership stars have been included to confront the Sandgropers from 1.10pm, as West End State coach Marty Mattner begins to finalise his preparations.
Sturt captain Zane Kirkwood, who was the skipper of the side which beat the VFL at Adelaide Oval in 2016, headlines the list of stars selected while his deputy two years ago – Steven Summerton – is again on board to wear the cherished red guernsey.
The midfield depth of the squad is a significant feature, with Norwood premiership pair Matt Panos and Mitch Grigg named, together with ball magnets Kaine Stevens (West) and Travis Schiller (Central).
A Fos Williams Medallist in 2015 – the last time SANFL clashed with WAFL in Perth – Tom Keough has returned to the line-up but whether he plays in defence remains in question considering key defenders such as Sturt’s Fraser Evans, Jack Stephens and Eagles co-captain Luke Thompson are among those chosen.
Joining Mattner on the coaching panel this year will be Norwood coach Jarrod Cotton, retired Crows star Scott Thompson and 2015 West Adelaide premiership mentor Mark Mickan.
Central District premiership heroes Chris and James Gowans will don the fluoros as on-field runners for coach Mattner.
Training will continue on Tuesday next week at Alberton Oval, with a final run schedule on Adelaide Oval -weather permitting – on Thursday May 10.
Starting at 1.10pm, the match will also be a curtain-raiser to the AFL Showdown between Adelaide and Port Adelaide – which begins at 4.40pm.
